Maison Mieko par amit kumar is a creative collaboration giving new life to what otherwise would have been discarded fabrics.
Mieko was born into a shopkeeping family in Miyazaki City on the island of Kyushu, Japan. She started as a fashion designer in Tokyo and later moved in New York. She opened her first store in New York’s West Village in 1999.
Mieko has always been in love with vintage, recycled fabrics and her special bond with kanthas is inseparable from her identity as a fashion designer. Her passionate creations are comfortable, sophisticated and contemporary. The quest to merge two cultures in her clothing started in 2010 when she first travelled to India.
Today, the Mieko Mintz label defines luxury kantha clothing and is carried by many upscale stores and prestigious boutiques across the United States and Japan.
Amit Kumar is part of a long entrepreneurial journey of crafted textiles. Founder and CMD of a private home textile firm, his work has redefined handcraftsmanship and sustainability since 1989. From large retailers to America’s beloved private label brands, all have carried his products over the past few decades.
Today working with clusters of carefully selected hand-artisans throughout India, he has shown tremendous strength in executing hand-crafted works which otherwise had seemed impossible with responsibly sourced materials.
Over years of collaborations, Mieko and Amit became increasingly interested in developing a series of home textile products utilizing vintage materials.
The decision for co-branding is equally motivated by social consciousness, hoping the association will bring longevity to both brands in one “Maison Mieko par amit kumar.”
Our goal is to present an innovative brand at a time when the whole world is environmentally concerned like never before.
